PRESS RELEASE
SAFETY IN ARGENTINA’S AIRSPACE JEOPARDIZED
The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) condems the Argentinian Authorities careless abandonment of accepted international terms of reference pertaining to levels of safety in aviation. It has come to the attention of IFATCA that Fuerza Aerea Argentina, the air navigation services provider in Argentina, a Member State of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has chosen to disrespect key provisions of its safety management system agreement. The principal radar at Ezeiza has been off the air since March 1, 2007. As a result, there have been several documented cases of serious losses of minimum separation between aircraft occurring due to faulty radar coverage. Both controllers and pilots have refuted statements by authorities that air safety was assured with the secondary radar functioning. Both groups have expressed their concerns that aviation safety in Argentina and surrounding areas has been, and remains, seriously compromised. IFATCA believes that any decision to delay the repair and return to service of this essential piece of radar equipment displays a level of disrespect for air safety in general and for the travelling public in particular. We respectfully remind authorities in Argentina that safety remains the number one priority throughout the aviation community and must not be compromised. This situation in Buenos Aires is very grave and if not brought under control immediately the likelihood of an aviation accident occurring in the airspace under Argentina’s jurisdiction increases significantly.
